Open access

IOP Publishing is a strong supporter of open science and open access to scientific research. A pioneer in open access publishing in physics, we launched the first fully open access journal in physics, New Journal of Physics, with the Institute of Physics and the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft in 1998. Since then, we have launched several new fully open access journals. In addition, we have introduced open access publishing options for authors in our conventional subscription journals. Click here for a full list of all of IOP Publishing’s open access options.

Transformative and institutional open access agreements

IOP has established agreements to enable authors from a variety of institutions to publish on an open access basis at no cost to themselves. Further details about these agreements can be found on our institutional open access page.

Waivers and discounts

Inability to pay for some or all of an APC should not be a barrier to submitting work in IOP’s gold open access journals, and it is our policy to assist authors from developing countries who choose to publish with us.

Open access licences

By default, we publish all open access articles under a Creative Commons Attribution (CC BY licence), which allows the widest possible sharing of research, while ensuring full attribution for authors.

Supporting the infrastructure of open access

IOP Publishing is a member of the Open Access Scholarly Publishers Association and a sponsor and member of the Directory of Open Access Journals.
