Open access options at IOP Publishing

IOP Publishing provides a range of options to enable authors to publish their work on an open access basis, with all of our journals ensuring the same high-standard of peer review and publication.

Many institutions and research funders have stated policies on open access and we advise authors check these before submitting an article. Information on policies at some institutions and funders can be found at SHERPA Juliet or ROARMAP.

Gold open access

Authors can make their final published article immediately free to read and reuse by others in all of IOP Publishing’s primary research journals and many of the journals we publish on behalf of our society partners.

We publish a range of fully open access journals or provide the option to publish under an open access licence in most of our subscription-based journals.

All authors publishing on an open access basis in IOP Publishing’s journals retain copyright and publish under a CC-BY licence.

Green open access

Authors publishing in one of IOP Publishing’s subscription-based journals can archive the accepted version of their article on a personal website immediately or on an institutional or subject repository 12 months after publication. A preprint of the article can be posted at any time on non-commercial repositories or preprint servers such as arXiv. Further information about green open access.
