The Accepted Manuscripts and Final Published Versions of articles published under the gold open access model by IOP are currently, unless stated otherwise, published under a Creative Commons Attribution licence (CC BY). The Accepted Manuscripts and Final Published Versions of articles published under the gold open access model by IOP prior to 2013 are, unless stated otherwise, published under a CC BY-NC-SA licence. Please check the first page of the article itself to clarify under which licence it was published.
For articles published under a CC BY-NC-ND licence, you—in common with all third parties—may reuse the article for non-commercial purposes only and may post the article to non-commercial repositories and non-commercial websites so long as you include attribution to the authors and the journal citation, and so long as no modifications or adaptions were made to the article. If you wish to modify, adapt, or otherwise transform the article, you may not distribute the modified version. For full licence terms and attribution requirements, please refer to the CC-BY-NC-NC licence on the Creative Commons website.
The Final Published Version / Version of Record of a subscription article cannot be shared online in any circumstances (including to a personal website, or any non-commercial repositories). The Named Authors can, however, deposit the Accepted Manuscript version of a subscription article on a non-commercial institutional or subject based repository, including arXiv.org, after the expiry of the 12 month post publication embargo period. When depositing the Accepted Manuscript, the Named Authors must ensure that any copyright notice and any cover sheet applied by IOP is not deleted or modified, the Accepted Manuscript is only made available under a CC BY-NC-ND licence, and the following wording is included: ‘This is the Accepted Manuscript version of an article accepted for publication in [NAME OF JOURNAL]. IOP Publishing Ltd is not responsible for any errors or omissions in this version of the manuscript or any version derived from it. The Version of Record is available online at [insert DOI].’
Authors publishing in select The Electrochemical Society (ECS) journals may choose to publish under either a CC BY licence or a CC BY-NC-ND licence when publishing on a gold open access basis. Articles published under a CC BY-NC-ND licence may only be used for non-commercial purposes and no derivative works may be shared.
The CC BY licence allows you to:
- Copy, distribute and transmit the Final Published Version and/or the Version of Record of the article for non-commercial purposes and
- Post the Final Published Version and/or the Version of Record of the article in a non-commercial repository at any time after publication by IOP (see our Author Rights Policy for information on commercial repositories)
on the condition that (see licence for full terms):
- Attribution to the author(s), the title of the work, journal citation and DOI is maintained
- A link to the licence is provided
- You indicate if any changes were made and
- The content is only used for non-commercial purposes (note that publishing a research article or a figure in another publication is deemed to be
commercial use).
If you wish to use the content licensed under a CC BY-NC-ND licence for commercial purposes, or if you wish to share adaptations of content published under a CC BY-NC-ND licence, even for non-commercial purposes, then you must obtain the express permission of the copyright owner.
Please note that you must still obtain express permission from the relevant copyright owner to reuse any third party content contained within the article (as content which is not original to the article will not be covered by the CC BY-NC-ND licence).
If you are planning on being unavailable for a period of time, please enter the dates into the ‘Unavailable Dates’ section OF the ‘User ID / Password & Other Information’ area of your ScholarOne account. This will help ensure we do not send you requests to review an article while you are unavailable.
Use our Submission Checklist to check that you’re ready to submit an article to us. It covers all of the things you’ll need to cover before you start the process. Once you’ve checked everything off the list, find the journal where you want to submit your article and follow the submission guidelines on our ScholarOne site.
There is also a Chinese language version of the Checklist.
