Researchers from Max Planck Institutes

IOP Publishing (IOP) and The Max Planck Society (MPG) have established an agreement which covers the cost of licensed access to the subscription journals portfolio and allows authors to publish on a hybrid open access basis at no cost to themselves. The agreement covers the open access APC centrally for Max-Planck-affiliated corresponding authors so authors and institutions will not need to pay a fee or take any further action to arrange publication.

This arrangement has been updated for 2021 and applies to eligible articles accepted for publication during 2021.

All IOP and selected partner society subscription journals that offer a hybrid open access option are included in the agreement, and Max Planck will also cover the APC for articles in gold open access journals.

How to take advantage of the agreement

This agreement applies to all primary research article types: Letters, Papers, Reviews and Special Issue articles.

1. At submission
The corresponding (submitting) author must be affiliated with a MPG institution. When you submit your article please supply your affiliation clearly in the article submission form and in the article itself. Please acknowledge any research funding if asked during submission as well as in the manuscript itself.

2. At first decision
You will be notified of identification during the peer-review process or shortly after acceptance, and your paper will automatically be opted in to open access. You may opt out at any time.

3. Upon acceptance
IOP Publishing will validate the article with a dedicated contact at MPG to approve funding. If for any reason funding is declined, you will have the option to find alternative funding or return to publication at no charge on a subscription basis.

4. Publication
All validated articles are published with a CC-BY license at no cost to the author, and comply with any funder mandates for open access.

If you have not been alerted before your article is accepted, you should contact the journal and the Max Planck open access team to establish whether your APC can be covered by the agreement.

The Electrochemical Society journals

Max Planck authors can also publish hybrid open access in ECS journals at no additional cost by selecting the ECS Plus option when submitting an article. There is no identification service for these journals.

Please note: charges for additional options such as colour print or physical copies are not covered by any agreement. Any page charges or publication fees not related to open access will be payable by the authors.
