Researchers from Max Planck Institutes
IOP Publishing (IOP) and The Max Planck Society (MPG) have established an agreement which covers the cost of licensed access to the subscription journals portfolio and allows authors to publish on a hybrid open access basis at no cost to themselves. The agreement covers the open access APC centrally for Max-Planck-affiliated corresponding authors so authors and institutions will not need to pay a fee or take any further action to arrange publication.
This arrangement is valid for articles accepted between January 1, 2018 and December 31, 2020.
All IOP and selected partner society subscription journals that offer a hybrid open access option are included in the agreement.

How to take advantage of the agreement
This agreement applies to all primary research article types: Letters, Papers and Special Issue articles. Review articles are not included.
1. At submission
The corresponding (submitting) author must be affiliated with a MPG institution. When you submit your article please supply your affiliation clearly in the article submission form and in the article itself.
2. At first decision
You will be notified of identification during the peer-review process after the first decision phase, and your paper will automatically be opted in to open access. You may opt out at any time.
3. Upon acceptance
IOP Publishing will validate the article with a dedicated contact at MPG to approve funding. If for any reason funding is declined, you will have the option to find alternative funding or return to publication at no charge on a subscription basis.
All validated articles are published with a CC-BY license at no cost to the author, and comply with any funder mandates for open access.
If you have not been alerted before your article is accepted, you should contact the journal and the Max Planck open access team to establish whether your APC can be covered by the agreement.
The Electrochemical Society journals
Max Planck authors can also publish hybrid open access in ECS journals at no additional cost by selecting the ECS Plus option when submitting an article. There is no identification service for these journals.
Gold Open Access journals
APCs in gold open access journals may be covered for Max Planck corresponding authors through a parallel agreement, and will follow the identification process as above with the library confirming funding after article acceptance. This currently includes:
- Environmental Research Letters
- Journal of Physics Communications
- Materials Research Express
- New Journal of Physics
Please note: charges for additional options such as colour print or physical copies are not covered by any agreement.
