Open Access in Hungary
IOP Publishing (IOP) and the EISZ Consortium in Hungary have come to an agreement which enables researchers at subscribing institutions to publish their work on an open access basis at no additional cost in the majority of IOP’s journals. The agreement balances the cost of article publication charges (APCs) against journal license fees for 2020 onwards.
All corresponding (submitting) authors at subscribing Hungarian institutions (below) can publish in eligible journals open access without barriers, without additional cost, and be certain that they comply to any open access requirement. Research articles (letters, papers and special issue articles) accepted for publication after 1 Jan 2020 are eligible, IOP will automatically identify qualifying articles and inform authors of their inclusion.
The agreement covers both hybrid open access and gold open access, with IOP automatically identifying potentially eligible articles:
- All IOP gold open access journals are covered, including New Journal of Physics, Environmental Research Letters, and more (see below).
- All IOP and selected partner subscription titles that offer a hybrid open access option are included in the agreement.

How to take advantage of the agreement
This process applies to all primary research article types: Letters, Papers, Reviews and Special Issue articles.
The corresponding (submitting) author must be affiliated with a member institution. When you submit your article please supply your affiliation clearly in the article submission form and in the article itself. Please acknowledge any research funding if asked during submission as well as in the manuscript itself.
If your article is identified you will be notified during the peer-review process and your paper will automatically be opted in to open access if it isn’t already. You’ll be asked to agree to the CC-BY open access license. If you wish to opt out please do so within five days of identification.
IOP Publishing will validate the article with a dedicated contact at your institution to approve funding. If for any reason funding is declined, you will have the option to find alternative funding or if the article is in a hybrid journal return to publication at no charge on a subscription basis.
Validated articles will be published open access under a CC-BY license at no cost to you. You can share it as you wish and the article will comply with funder mandates.
If you have not been alerted before your article is accepted, please contact the journal to ensure that your work is included in the arrangement.
