About AI Horizons
Scope
AI Horizons is an international, interdisciplinary journal publishing high-quality original research articles, reviews, and perspectives on advances in the theory, methods, and applications of artificial intelligence (AI). The journal focuses on AI that accelerates scientific discovery and engineering innovation, models complex spatiotemporal systems, and enables intelligent action in the physical world. It also publishes research at the interface of AI and emerging quantum technologies. Topics include, but are not limited to:
- AI for Scientific and Engineering Innovation: Scientific machine learning; physics-informed and physics-guided AI; AI-enabled scientific computing and engineering simulation; digital twins; and AI-enabled scientific discovery.
- Embodied AI: Robot learning, planning, and control; reinforcement learning for embodied agents; autonomous and embodied multi-agent systems; multimodal embodied perception and interaction; and human–robot interaction.
- Spatiotemporal Intelligence: Representation learning, data mining, modeling, and decision-making for multi-source spatiotemporal data; intelligent urban, infrastructure, energy, and environmental systems; and AI applications in remote sensing, climate, and Earth system sciences.
- Quantum Intelligence: Quantum machine learning; hybrid classical–quantum AI; quantum-enhanced learning and optimization; AI for quantum science and engineering; and quantum computing for AI.
Within these focus areas, the journal prioritizes original research that makes a substantive theoretical or methodological advance, establishes a broadly transferable capability or a reusable research resource, or produces important scientific or engineering insight supported by rigorous validation. It also welcomes research that advances trustworthy and explainable AI.
The journal provides an international forum for research connecting advances in AI with important scientific and engineering problems. It publishes both fundamental and applied work and is committed to rigorous, fair, and timely peer review overseen by an international editorial board.
Why should you publish in AI Horizons?
- Gold open access without an APC: Your paper will be published Gold Open Access (OA), providing you and the scientific community with immediate access to articles without the payment of a subscription fee or licence. All the costs of publishing the journal are covered by the journal Editorial Office, ensuring maximum visibility at no cost to you.
- International Editorial Board: Your paper will be managed by an Editorial Board comprising of leading experts and established group of leading scientists and engineers, providing support and guidance throughout the publication process.
- High standards: Your manuscript will undergo a thorough and rigorous peer review process, and will be checked for scientific validity, novelty, quality, and alignment with the journal scope.
- Fast publication: AI Horizons is committed to providing you with a fast, professional service to ensure rapid first decision, acceptance and publication. Once accepted, your article will be accessible to readers within 24 hours, with a citable DOI.
- Ease of formatting: You can format your manuscript in any way you choose; the design and typesetting will be undertaken by IOP Publishing as part of the publication process.
Article types
AI Horizons welcomes submissions of the following article types:
- Research Papers: Articles of unlimited length that report original research of outstanding quality, and which make a significant advance in the field.
- Topical Reviews: Written by leading experts, these articles present the background and overview of a particular field, and the current state of the art. Topical review articles are normally invited by the Editorial Board. However, authors may submit a proposal for consideration to the editorial office (aih_publishing@eitech.edu.cn), including abstract, outline, summary of related prior Reviews, and key publications of the lead author, prior to submitting the full manuscript.
- Perspectives: Highlighting the impact and wider implications of new research conducted in the field, normally written from a personal standpoint and judgement of an eminent author. Perspectives can be speculative and advocate a controversial position. They have a word limit of 3000 words and are typically by invitation only.
- Letters: Reporting urgent and breakthrough work in the field. Letters have a word limit of 4000 with up to five figures/tables. Authors have the opportunity to apply for fast-track peer review, and a justification statement regarding novelty is required in the cover letter along with the submission.
- Mini Reviews: Concise, focused summaries of recent advances on a specific topic, typically shorter than full-length reviews. They have a word limit of 4000 with up to five figures/tables.
- Technical notes: Short descriptors relating to software and code.
- Comment: Comment or criticism on work previously published in the journal. Usually published with associated Reply.
Reply: Invited response usually from the authors whose work is criticised in the associated Comment. - News and views: These articles inform non-specialist readers about new scientific advances, as reported in recently published papers (in AI Horizons and elsewhere).
Peer review
The following summary describes the peer review process for AI Horizons, using the ANSI/NISO Standard Terminology for Peer Review:
- Identity transparency: single-anonymous, double-anonymous (author choice)
- Reviewer interacts with: Editor
Our Publishing Support website provides more information on our reviewing process as well as checklists in both English and Chinese language to help authors prepare their manuscripts for submission.
If an article is not accepted for publication, we may offer the author the opportunity to transfer their submission to other suitable journals we publish.
