Reviewer of the Year: Professor Alessandro Olivo, University College London, UK

Having been a fan of Physics in Medicine and Biology (PMB)’s high quality articles for many years, Professor Alessandro Olivo is in no doubt that the journal is an invaluable tool for the research community. In spite of the increasing amount of submissions, he believes PMB’s review process is fair, considered and standardized—although more resources will need to be invested in the whole peer review system to maintain high levels of service overall.

Professor Olivo looks for novelty and scientific rigour in manuscripts, finding great reward in uncovering research that is ‘genuinely novel’. Authors generally understand that reviewers are there to help and not hamper publication, he says, which is why he gains much satisfaction from knowing he has made a difference.

Professor Olivo points to X-ray phase-contrast imaging: from pre-clinical applications towards clinics as an example of a well-balanced, exhaustive and well-written paper.

Recognizing that first-time reviewers are likely to be early-stage researchers, Professor Olivo urges them not to be intimidated by big names in the author list. He advises young scientists to focus on the quality of the paper and to write reviews that are neither too short nor too long—both of which are unhelpful to authors. Be factual, he says, and offer constructive criticism.

An experienced and long-time reviewer, Professor Olivo is pleased to have been acknowledged for the passion and care he puts into reviewing.
