Open access terminology guide

What is gold open access?

Gold open access is the model under which an article publication charge is paid by the author, their institution, the funding body or a third party to make the article freely available immediately to read and to reuse if the gold open access licence allows it. New Journal of Physics, Journal of Physics Communications and Environmental Research Letters are examples of gold open access journals. Gold open access articles currently published by IOP are published under a CC BY 3.0 licence.

What is Creative Commons licensing?

Creative Commons is a non-profit organization that has released several copyright licences known as Creative Commons licences free of charge to the public. The licences grant rights to the users of the content but do not replace the copyright, which remains with the copyright owner. IOP generally publishes open access articles under a CC BY 3.0 licence. This licence lets others distribute, remix, tweak and build upon the author’s work, even commercially, as long as they credit the author for the original creation.

What is the subscription-based access model?

Traditionally, access to journal articles has been restricted to members of subscribing institutions. The subscribing institutions pay an annual subscription fee to the publisher of the journal for continued access to the content.

What is a platinum open access journal?

Platinum (also known as sponsored or diamond) open access journals allow immediate access to the content of the journal without the payment of a subscription fee or licence. Authors pay no article publication charge and all the costs of publishing the journal are met by one or more sponsoring organizations.

IOP publishes two sponsored open access journals on behalf of partners:

  • The Vietnamese Academy of Science & Technology: Advances in Natural Sciences: Nanoscience and Nanotechnology
  • China Academy of Engineering Physics: International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing

What is a hybrid open access journal?

Hybrid open access refers to a publishing model in which subscription-based journals allow authors to make individual articles gold open access immediately on payment of an article publication charge.
