Open access options for authors

IOP Publishing offers authors several routes to open access:

Gold open access journals allow immediate access to the content of the journal without the payment of a subscription fee or licence. Authors pay an article publication charge (APC) to cover the costs of publishing in the journal. Prices vary between journals; see the individual journal pages for pricing information or visit our APC pricing page to learn more about how our APCs are set.

All IOP Publishing open access content is published under a CC BY licence. For more information about the CC BY licence, please see the copyright and permissions pages.

IOP Publishing publishes six gold open access journals:

Sponsored open access journals allow immediate access to the content of the journal without the payment of a subscription fee or licence. Authors pay no article publication charge and all the costs of publishing the journal are met by one or more sponsoring organizations.

The hybrid open access option allows authors to publish their articles immediately on an open access basis (under a CC BY licence) in journals normally only accessible to members of subscribing institutions. An article publication charge (APC) is payable by the author.

Full information on how APC prices are set, and how hybrid APC revenue is taken into account in setting subscription prices, is available on our APC pricing pages.

The majority of subscription journals published by IOP Publishing and its partners offer a hybrid open access option. The full list is available here.

IOP Publishing generally allows authors of an article published on a subscription basis to post the Accepted Manuscript, accompanied by a statement of provenance, on their institutional repository or subject repository (in both cases only where non-commercial) after a 12 month embargo period (which runs from the date of first online publication on IOPscience of the Final Published Version). To comply with the requirements of the HEFCE post-2014 REF policy, IOP Publishing also allows closed deposits within certain specified time-frames. To see full information on this, please refer to our Author Rights Policy.

IOP Publishing’s conference series journals provide conference organizers with a cost-effective means of publishing proceedings on an open access basis. Readers can access the content of the journals immediately without payment of a subscription fee or licence. Authors pay no article publication charge and all the costs of publishing the journal are met by the conference organizers.

For more information about the conference series, please visit the Publishing Support homepage (and click on “Conference Organisers”).
